During the Jazz age of the 1920’s, accessories were extremely important in high society. The best women’s purses were of platinum, studded with diamonds and gemstones. Inside those purses were “compacts” or “necessaires” of equal opulence. The great Paris and Buenos Aries jewelry firm, Ghiso was one of the foremost designers of Art Deco compacts. This octagonal 18kt gold jewel is of an oriental garden scene with a dramatic pair of enamel peacocks, a rose-cut diamond and cabochon-cut sapphire incense burner set in platinum, red lacquered trellises with dogwood flowers and vines bathed in shaded yellow enamel reminiscent of sunlight at dawn. There is a yellow gold chain with applied enamel flowers. The inside of the compact reveals a mirror, two compartments for make up and rouge and a small lipstick case all of 18kt gold.
