We are all fascinated with the magic and marvel of “how did they do that?” when a magic trick is performed. In the world of elite jewelry, magic was created in the early 1930’s by Monsieur Alfred Van Cleef and Monsieur Julien Arpels at their Place Vendome atelier in Paris. Both of these jewelry geniuses were obsessed with the beauty of great gemstones such as Kashmir sapphires and Burma rubies, but were always frustrated by the constraints of having to set these wonderful gemstones against metallic prongs. They solved this problem with magic, by making jewelry with “invisible settings” or “Serti Mystéreux”…with no visible metal. “How did they do that?” By using a tongue and groove system of cutting each gemstone, they would set the stones in such a precise manner that no metal would be visible. Thus, the pure beauty of the gemstones would not be compromised with metal.
