The world's most famous and wealthiest denizens journeyed to Paris at the turn of the century for the Paris World's Fair of 1900.  There, people were treated to an artistic revolution never seen before....the culmination of the Art Nouveau movement.  Among the highlights at this World's Fair was the collection of Baron Joseph Vitta (1860-1940), the son of a wealthy European banking family and one of the great patrons of the arts.  On display was an incredible toiletry set including a hand mirror, currently at the Cleveland Museum, and this "coupe sur pied" pictured here.  This magnificent example of Art Nouveau is of intricate yellow gold filigree with Baron Joseph Vitta's distinctive monogram. Its base and cup is of plique-à-jour enamel in a motif of fruits, berries, leaves and ribbons.  Many famous artists of the era worked on Baron Vitta's objects including the sculptor Auguste Rodin, the enamellist Alexandre Riquet, and the designer Felix Bracquemond.

Coupe sur pied of gold, plique-à-jour enamel and enamel by Felix Bracquemond and Alexandre Riquet for Baron Joseph Vitta and exhibited at the Paris World's Fair, 1900.
