www.nelsonrarities.com A truly historic auction occurred in May of 1887. The French government ordered the sale of the French crown jewels including the crowns of Louis XV and Napoleon. Charles Lewis Tiffany head of Tiffany & Co. was the largest buyer of these jewels, buying 24 of the 67 lots. Returning to America, Tiffany cleverly publicized and romanticized these French royal purchases, particularly emphasizing the Napoleonic jewels and Napoleon’s re-discovery of Egypt earlier in the century. This started an Egyptian-revival mania in jewelry, silver and architecture. Pictured here is a wonderful example of Egyptian-revival jewelry of the late 1800’s sold by Tiffany & Co and designed by their great jewelry designer G. Paulding Farnham. |
